Most commercial buildings have sprinkler systems because they are required by law. However, not all systems are the same. Each type is designed for a specific application and occupancy. A fire protection professional can assist in determining which systems are best suited for a specific building. One option includes quick response sprinklers that do exactly what they say—respond quickly.
Quick Response Applications
Quick response sprinklers are preferred where there is a high density of people at any given time. They are not to be confused with “Fast Response Sprinklers.” Typical applications for quick response sprinklers are hospitals and schools, among others. In addition to responding quickly, these systems are designed to mitigate fire damage to the building. The purpose of quick response sprinklers is to provide ample evacuation time for building occupants.
Differences from Standard Sprinklers
There are only two differences between quick response fire sprinklers and standard sprinklers.
- Bulb Size: The main difference between quick response and standard sprinklers is the bulb size. Standard sprinklers have a 5 mm bulb, while quick response sprinklers have a 3 mm bulb. The smaller bulb is what makes it a quick response sprinkler—this bulb will melt or burst faster than the larger bulb on a standard sprinkler, activating the sprinkler more quickly.
- Placement: Quick response sprinkler systems are located closer to the ceiling. They are also spaced differently than standard sprinklers, enabling the system to prevent a large fire. This increases the time people have to evacuate the building.
Is a Quick Response System Right for Your Facility?
It is always a best practice to discuss your building and occupancy with a trusted fire protection professional who can help determine the best systems for your business. If you’re not sure about certain areas or have a large operation, it’s a good idea to determine whether quick response fire sprinklers are the right choice for your facility.
