Firework Safety
The U.S. Fire Administration recommends attending a public fireworks display and leaving the show to the professionals. A study from the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) shows that an average of 200 people suffer firework-related injuries in the month of July. If you decide to buy your own fireworks, be extra cautious, have a fire extinguisher nearby, and don’t hesitate to contact fire safety professionals for advice or help.
Grilling Fire Safety
It is essential when grilling to wear a short-sleeve shirt to prevent your clothes from catching fire. Maintain a safe zone of about three feet around the grill and remember to regularly remove grease and fat buildup from the trays below the grill. Never leave your grill unattended, no matter the circumstances.
Lawn Mower Fire Care
Follow your lawn mower’s manufacturer’s recommended maintenance plan for your equipment. Remove all debris and grass clippings from mufflers, cutting units, and engines. Never refuel your lawn mower if it is overheated, either.
Gas Storage for Fire Safety
Don’t store gasoline, liquid fire starter, propane, or any other kind of flammable liquids near your grill or other ignition sources. The best place to store any flammable liquid in a well-ventilated area outside. Ensure that the seal is tight, and the container stored upright on a level surface for ideal fire safety.
HVAC Checkup and Maintenance
Annual inspection of your air conditioning system could prevent a house fire. Dirty units can cause short circuits, as well as other electrical malfunctions that could lead to an air conditioning fire.
Alarm Inspections for Proper Fire Safety
Inspecting your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors regularly are the best ways to detect fires and carbon monoxide. Replace your batteries when you change your clocks in the spring and fall. Read the instructions on how to test your detectors to make sure they’re in good working order.
