The Basic Components of Commercial Fire Protection

Commercial fire protection

Do you know what fire protection equipment you should have in your commercial space?

When it comes to protecting your commercial space, it is important to not only follow the codes and regulation but to take extra measures as well. Simply installing a sprinkler system may not be enough to protect your employees and equipment. Let’s take a moment to discuss what components you should have for your commercial fire protection systems.

Fire Alarm Panel

Fire alarm panels are the brain of your entire fire protection and suppression system. This device monitors every device that is connected to your fire protection system and relays information between them. This panel monitors the system’s integrity and output for signs of a fire or smoke.

Initiating Devices

Connected to your fire alarm panel is the initiating device, more commonly known as the fire alarm. There are two different types of initiating devices: manual and automatic. When these devices are initiated, it sets off an alarm to alert people of danger. Manual devices need to be pulled in order to be activated while automatic devices respond when they detect the physical changes that come with fire like smoke and heat.

Primary Power Supply

The main power source of your building is actually the main power source for your fire protection and suppression system as well. There is usually a dedicated circuit for your system that is usually controlled by the power company.

Secondary Power Supply

The secondary power supply is used as a back-up in the event of a storm or power outage. It usually consists of batteries, an emergency generator, or another type of emergency power device. This system is engaged when something happens to the primary power supply to ensure your fire protection and suppression system is constantly running even when the power goes out.

Notification

There are many different types of notification devices available for your commercial space including horns and strobe lights. These systems alert the occupants that there is a fire and they should leave the building immediately.

These are just some of the components you will need in your commercial space. Each one of these components is there to ensure your employees and customers leave the building safely in the event of a fire.
